Practical? Absolutely! I'd defend it to the last as it's applying critical thinking in the subject of science and applying it to Transformers. I can understand why someone would not care for an aspect of it to be included, but the reasoning that it's just stupid or impossible is simply unfounded. As for durability issues, it would be mostly in effect for the Transformers that don't so much use the dimensional mass-shifting for size change during transformation, but the "layered armor" design like described in detail by Dreamwave for the likes of some TFs. But that's another form of "size-shifting" unrelated to mass-shifting, and wouldn't apply. I don't much care for it myself. I mean I can totally get onboard with the idea depending on the robot/alt mode relation there would be some that have greater durability in one mode over the other, but when you apply that logic in strictly that form of size-changing to something like (say for example) Soundwave, the result (without dimensional mass-shifting of some sort) would result in what I'd call a practically paper-thin robot mode. And that, no, would not be practical at all.

This makes me think of the Batmobile 'shield' effect in those movies before Batman Begins. The panels seemed to come out of nowhere, but people still thought it was cool, right?

Ok, so here's my thinking for Soundwave. He's never been a conventional Decepticon so why start now? No the idea of a tapedeck doesn't work because who uses cassettes these days? A helicopter just doesn't jive either. My thinking pushes me towards a military type vehicle with both weapons and communications gear. Laserbeak could launch from the vehicle and so could Rumble, if they even go that way in the flick. As far as what vehicle could do that, I'm no military expert so I'm clueless. However, seeing as how Bay has the full nod of the military for this film, maybe they'll give him some ideas for something like that.

that was the original concept when he was a copter the minions would be part of him or uavs stored inside the cargo compartment. but eithor way i say why bother even having the minions then. there is no point. nothing gives you that same sybiotic relationship of the tape and tape player. everything else just feels forced. better to make the minions seperate bots.

you see a radar dish transform you wonder why the hell is he falling apart. you see a tape pop out of his chest and you think oh wow even the tapes can transform.

i said it before if the prodection team can come up with a mode for soundwave that gives the same relationship the tape deck and tapes have then i will hail them as geniouses for all time weather the movie sucks or not.
