A Really Kewl Astronomy Fact

I found out about this over the weekend and thought it to be really kewl to know about. Check it out! Earth's Second Moon ; Alternate Article 1 ; Alternate Article 2

The first link is a wiki, but the next two are more "ligit". The wiki is kewl due to it's illustrations.

I can't believe more people have not responded. Saturn having a new mammoth ring is kewler than the Earth having two moons???

It's not a second moon, though. It has it's own orbit around the Sun irrelative to the Earth...it just happens to share a close (and yet, very far) path.

It's interesting, but Saturn's ring system extending millions of miles in all directions is a bit more exciting sounding.

WT is right, if it has it's own orbit it isn't OUR moon, probably better described as "The tenth planet".

The planet thing is a whole other scenerio seeing as how there are 4 other moons in the solar system that are bigger than ours.

I posted the links to the articles for explanatory purpose. Yes, it has it's own ordit; but this orbit is being sustained by the Earth's gravity. It's official designation is a "quasi satillite". One of the articles even suggests that the definition of a moon may have to be re-examined(like the definition of a planet was a few years back) due to co-orbital objects that are held to their orbits because of the planet's influence.

Ah well...I thought it intersting.

I post more than I intend to, but not nearly as often as I used to.

I think half the problem has got to be that with two films now on DVD and another not due for 2 years - there really isn't that much going on TF wise. so those who only came on to rage about Bay, have moved on, many more have been banned, and a few (some of whom are friends of mine) just lost interest in message boards of any description, either during or just before the first film was being released.

It is a cool fact, and as someone who once entertained the notion of training to be an astronomer, it is interesting to me. It's just not one of those topics that is going to spark much debate - unless we get off topic...

It was actually closer to 17 years of work for my cousin. I doubt this mission resulting in little information would kill the space program, but if that were the result then he'd be even more bummed for sure.

As the wiki states, NH has been transmitting at various points on its voyage. In fact, during one of its most recent wake up periods, transmissions were received by a German radio amateur on a 7-meter dish (as well as being received by mission control, of course).
